mlqc | sunday morning
Tumblr media
I recently (well~like three months ago) got into this game called Mr Love: Queen’s Choice, and after doing some ‘research’ aka gaming, I felt confident enough to write something. So, here’s a little headcanon about a blissful Sunday morning with the boys~
Warning(s): ever so slightly NSFW (insinuations of a dirty-minded author), profanity/swearwords
Victor
Tumblr media
Victor’s quite the workaholic, as we all know
like this man will be working 60-70 hours a week, often bringing work home with him
you’ll be on the couch in pajamas and acting like a total bum while he’s literally next to you wearing glasses and breezing through 50 reports and documents
you steal his laptop and glasses when he starts criticising your report
“Victor noooooooo~work mode OFF!” as you zoom past him with his prescription glasses (he got them fancy glasses with the blue light filter because he’s A WORKAHOLIC and he’s always staring at a computer)
needless to say, this man doesn’t usually have time to spare
sunday mornings are yours though
Victor doesn’t necessarily take the entire day off, but after a certain dummy’s whining, he has agreed to try and have a lie-in on sundays
he *usually* still wakes up before you, because he functions on like 5 hours of sleep (lemme tell y’all, it’s a curse and a blessing in one)
Vic’s a total tsundere, but these moments definitely show off his #SoftCEO side
his little lovebug is sleeping peacefully, wearing one of his pyjama shirts (I bless you with the headcanon that Victor sleeps in silk pyjama pants sans shirt because he runs HOT)
actually, you’re drooling a little bit but even though Victor’s going to pretend he’s annoyed, he never is
oOOhh, also canon that this man is the big spoon in sleeping positions. he naturally gravitates towards you and holds you tight because he’s NEEDY
sometimes you’ll sleep facing each other. Victor holds you against his chest and just cradles your body in his like his life depends on it
100% will entangle his long ass legs with yours
strokes your hair and presses kisses on the crown of your head to wake you up in a gentle way (despite his demeanour, he’s actually remarkably gentle y’all see why i call him #SoftCEO?)
as you wake up, he’ll mock your bedhead with this incredibly fond look in his eyes baby boy these words don’t match your actions
you guys actually get up rather soon after, cos you are both busy people...
fun times in the bathroom not like tHAT well actually kinda~ but for legal reasons everything you do is PG, please spare author-nim who’s still ~barely~ underage
you take a shower and belt your favourite song that’s playing from the built-in speaker (did Victor get a built-in speaker because you thought it was cool? yep. did you ask? nope. did he do it anyways? yehep.) while he goes through his simple morning routine
you probably have more steps in your skincare routine, but he uses a serum, cleanser, moisturizer and some eye cream on the daily
has given you permission to do his skincare at night whenever you both have time
to reciprocate, he dries your hair after your shower you guys HAVE listened to the Right Beside You ASMR, right? ...it’s on YT for free because we’re poor, i know
also canon, blowing raspberries on Victor’s bare back while he’s brushing his teeth will make him choke on toothpaste. tested and approved by MC
“Dummy. What on earth are you doing?”
he hangs around and waits for you to get ready if he’s already done, you do the same. time is something Victor knows all too well, so the precious time he has, he wants to spend with you.
you guys DON’T shower together in the morning because really you’re not getting cleaner ahhh author-nim should really stop
afterwards, you get dressed in some relatively casual clothes (i’m talking a dress shirt without a tie or a polo shirt because no way that this man owns actual t-shirts) and have a simple breakfast
he cooks, obviously.
always makes a balanced, Chinese breakfast (congee or wonton, noodles, tofu pudding, etc.) because he wants you two to start the day well, even on a slow sunday
also, he travels a lot, so he likes eating Chinese food whenever he’s home
ahh...waking up with Victor just sounds like a dream
Lucien
Tumblr media
i’m a bit biased on this bitch because he was my first favourite in the game so this might get long. might not. just,,,we’ll see
Lucien is a bit like Victor, where he doesn’t sleep much and works a lot
On the other hand, his work is...ehem...shadier, so he usually works in his office when he’s at home
you’ll both have your own space to do whatever you need to do
days off for Lucien are rare. he usually powers through until he drops
for someone who constantly reminds you to take care of yourself, he’s mediocre at doing exactly that
after getting to know him better, which wasn’t an easy feat because damn this man has more layers than an onion he’ll also make you cry more bUUT we’re not ready to unpack that suitcase, you start noticing when he needs a day off. often even before he notices
you lock his office door and force him to take the FULL day off at least
he could technically open his office again, but he loves you and he’ll humour your attempts
Lucien wakes up before you. always. you’ve seen him asleep like 3 times in your entire relationship.
Luci sleeps like 8 hours,,,a week.
he watches you sleep i feel like that makes too much sense for his character. we love a creepy boy. and wholeheartedly feels at rest with your sleeping figure by his side
in his sleep, Lucien lies on his back, holding you by the waist as you sleep on top of him. your leg is often slung around his middle, so you’re enveloping him. he likes the weight of you on top of him; it keeps him grounded and he likes feeling like he’s yours as much as you are his.
on another note, Lucifer—ah whoops—sleeps butt naked. i honestly can’t imagine him wearing clothes in bed. he’s not shy about his body and feels absolutely no need to cover up for his significant other.
you, however, don’t usually sleep naked. well...nowadays you end up sleeping naked more often than not because alright author-nim’s horrible. can’t help it, he’s a fucking scorpio?
because you guys take a day off, Lucien’s content with waiting and watching until you wake up
he feels you stir on his chest and honestly your drowsy eyes make him swoon
“Already awake, my beautiful butterfly?”
his slightly husky morning voice *really* does things to a person tbh
you guys stay in bed for a good half hour after you wake up, just cuddling and talking, also sneaking in a kiss here and there
you have the same habit of tracing each other’s bodies with your fingertips
his fingers flutter over your waist, you trace his chest or hands with your index again, it’s a very grounding experience to Lucien
when you do get up and head to the bathroom, first thing you do is shower together
he likes washing your hair
bathroom bits might happen, but surprisingly, it’s not a thing that happens a lot so don’t come at me. we’re being wholesome
Lucien’s incredibly intimate and his love language is touch. Yes, he has a way with words but he’s also a really good manipulator
he’s used his words for evil too often and therefore can’t trust words anymore. so he uses physical intimacy as a way to show love.
Lucien has a skincare routine of dermatologically approved products. a double cleanse, serum, essence and moisturizer. he uses anti-age sometimes to prevent later wrinkles.
they’re also one of the reasons why he smells clean and fresh
will tickle you when you’re rinsing your mouth. you’ve sprayed water all over the bathroom mirror before. he loves the reaction.
if you’re having a day off, you’ll probably just wear sweatpants and a t-shirt or a sweater. Lucien’s closet is relatively plain but clean. he has the best cable-knit sweaters/cardigans though.
your breakfast consists of western things like yogurt or oatmeal. Lucien likes having fruit at the start of the day
the rest of the day is spent relaxing and lounging, walking in the park, biking, reading, drawing, whatever you’d like
maaan...i wish i had more days off
Gavin
Tumblr media
Gavin’s actually a decently laid-back person on weekends
like, sure he has to work a lot, but his job doesn’t necessarily force him to work from home, so you pretty much have his full attention at home but also he can’t bear to not give you his full attention so what are we expecting
the nasty thing about Gavin being a police officer is that sometimes, he gets called up and needs to work at unconventional hours
also, he gets injured. most of his injuries are minor, but that doesn’t stop you from worrying.
but anyways, he’s not a total busy bee when he’s at home, and relaxing isn’t exceptional
sunday mornings are...well...active. Birdcop goes on a run/hits the gym every morning, so he’s awake by 6am. what did y’all think i was going to write
afterwards, he takes a quick shower and joins you in bed again.
Gavin sleeps in a pair of basketball shorts and a singlet. he’s somewhat shy about sleeping shirtless, and god forbid he sleep naked. but it’s all good and he respects your boundaries. besides, he’s comfortable in his sleep and that’s all that matters.
you spoon in your sleep. sometimes, he’s the big spoon because he likes being able to ‘protect’ you in his sleep. other times, he relishes in the comfort of being the little spoon and feeling you pressed up against his back.
very important headcanon! you’ve learnt to sleep with the bedroom window open. on workdays, Gavin gets home late and jumps right into the bedroom. it’s become a typical habit for you two, although you used to be grumpy about not being able to sleep with the noises of traffic.
you’re usually awoken by the sound of the shower and Gavin’s humming it’s canon that he hums now, bitches. also I bet his singing voice is amazing
so it’s less ‘sleeping in’ and more ‘lounging in bed like the lazy bastards you are’ i’m kiDDING
if he’s able to, Gavin might convince you to go on a run with him....but let’s be honest, you rarely agree
Gavin’s a total cuddlebug though, so be prepared to spend the next forty-five minutes in the tightest hug ever (to be fair, you’re not complaining)
he’s completely soft for you and you’ll have to wrestle out of his grip to get to the bathroom
you don’t shower in the morning, so everything’s pretty quick
Gavin doesn’t actually have a good skincare regiment tbh...he’ll slap on some cream and that’s it. probably washes his face in the shower with body wash...AND HIS SKIN STILL LOOKS AMAZING
you like making funny faces in the mirror while brushing your teeth and making Gavin laugh while he’s watching you in the doorway. he loves how you just make his day with the smallest things.
you guys both dress in really casual clothing, like hoodies and shorts/sweatpants/pj pants unless you’re going somewhere
Gavin has them grey sweatpants, if you know what I mean okay I’ll chill, sorry~
you wear his shirts a lot because they’re super big on you and Gavin secretly not-so-secretly thinks you’re adorable in them (a good thing about Gavin is that he’s easy to read; he blushes rather quickly)
“Ahh...it’s just—you look so tiny and cute.” guess he’s not the only one blushing now
i see Gavin as a ‘bun for breakfast’ kind of person. he picks them up at the stall a couple of miles away when he heads home. sometimes he does so running, other times...well he’s not called Birdcop for nothing
you guys have 2 buns each for breakfast because they’re delicious
lounge time is often spent gaming or cleaning the house (you’re both busy people and Gavin tends to get messy because he just chucks clothes on the floor after a hard workday)
you make the most out of your sunday, hoping Gavin doesn’t get called in
who wouldn’t like being domestic with Gavin?
Kiro
Tumblr media
Kiro, unsurprisingly, has an incredibly busy schedule
one that, similar to Gavin, isn’t really decided by himself
i suppose his situation is a tad bit worse than Birdcop’s, since his workdays don’t even actually end when he gets home. he constantly practices choreos, singing, etc. at home
so, full days off are few and very, very far between
this makes them extra precious
it helps to have a lazy morning once in a while though (in Kiro’s case, lazy sundays are most likely a bi-weekly thing)
you wake up first! Kiro needs his beauty sleep, and damn this boy can knock in 16 hours of sleep if need be
you’ll probably lay in bed for a while and then attempt to get up and ready for the day
until...you feel Kiro’s arm tugging you back
for a skinny, lithe boy, he’s remarkably strong. he pulls you back to bed with the groggiest, cutest sleep-laced voice EVER
“Mmm, Miss Chips, it’s not time to wake up yet, is it?”
he snuggles into you and refuses to wake up unless you give him kisses
during the night, Kiro sleeps in actual pyjamas with cute characters on them. when he feels lazy, he’ll probably just slip on a t-shirt and some boxer shorts, but he likes putting in the effort to wear matching couple pyjamas
Kiro cuddles with you 24/7, and sleep makes little difference here. he’s often the little spoon because he does like feeling your presence and your grip on him. he moves around when sleeping, so you might end up out of each other’s embrace, but Kiro subconsciously always touches you in some way or form, like holding hands or intertwining legs. he’s a man with many identities and needs your presence as a reassurance that he’s still the man that you love
he loves to pepper your face with kisses after getting home from rehearsals/concerts, claiming that it gives him energy
you do the same in the morning, anything to hear that sweet giggle of his
he’s deceptively cute though, and innocent morning kisses tend to spiral into...something more let’s just be honest, his stamina is something else entirely i’M SORRY
morning exercise? check. Hotel? Trivago. non-sponsored~
you guys don’t shower in the morning. Kiro’s used to showering after practice, which is late at night, and you shower in the evenings to help you relax
however, on a rare occasion, you’ll draw a nice bath together and play around with bubbles and scented bath bombs so fun and relaxing
Kiro totally has a 14-step skincare regiment. you don’t get that beautiful baby-smooth skin without some effort.
he has the best ‘mid-range to high-end’ products on the market, and loves sweet and floral scents for his skincare and makeup. you guys try to line up each other’s routines to be able to do them together every morning.
Kiro also has a huge bedhead in the morning! it’s your job to get this sleepyhead styled for a fun day
even Kiro’s casual loungewear is top-notch hip and trendy. he has fun sweatpants with chains, belts, patches, you name it. he likes holding a little fashion show with you, no matter what you two are wearing
old jeans? strut it. thrifted shirt? vogue, honey.
Kiro’s on a strict diet, so usually he has a smoothie and some tofu pudding for breakfast. on occasion, you’ll indulge him in something decadent, like French toast or pancakes. on moments like these, you swear he loves you juuuuuust a little more but don’t tell Savin!
you guys are a relatively active couple, so unless you’re inside gaming or busy working, you’ll spend some time in thrift stores or karaoke bars, arcades, fun fairs,...
just thinking about Kiro brightens my day...
As always, I hope you enjoyed reading this! I’ll try to bring out more content for K-Pop idols, otome characters and anime characters during the holidays. Requests are still open, so don’t be afraid to send a little message in my ask-box!
Love,
R.

No kiss.  very fine morning F70° at 7 am   read from page 173 to 192 while A- dressed and E- did my hair - breakfast at 9 ½ to 10 25 - had Mr Brown - no mention of perspective - talked of castle Howard etc he made no remark worth notice -A- and he off to sketch at 10 35 - I sat cutting my nails and my right forefinger (a little in opening my knife) and wrote out the whole of yesterday till 11 20 am - then till 12 ¾ inking over pencil accounts and writing rough copy of letter to London about a school master and mistress. Out at 12 55 with E- went along the Ilkley road - good view of the abbey from the raised [?] of the road - to take wine and sandwiches and strawberries to A- too busy sketching on the south side (the new road to Ilkley at a small distance 50 or 60 yards off on this side) to think of eating - left Eugenie to walk about while I went for the girl to let us into the cloister’s garden - In passing Mr Spink’s house formerly the Abbots, a civil woman came and shewed me over the house - Mr S- a respectable farmer - lets off the new part of his house to Lodgers who come during the summer - has now a family of the name of Dixon from Sweden! - the kitchen and a sitting room in the same straight line, but on different levels, interesting old rooms each roofed by a lofty groined arch - the sitting room wainscoted (dark oak bright-rubbed) to a height of about near 6ft a neat plain chimney piece, and the plain stone mantel-piece painted a dark oak looks very well - sauntered in the garden - then to Johnston’s for the key - he is gamekeeper and concierge of the abbey - Lord Cardigan has a great deal of property hereabouts - reaching from here to Wakefield - he has not been here these 17 years but his son Lord Bingham of the Lancers, and his lady were here last year (while quartered at Leeds) and much pleased with the abbey and the tidiness of Mr Spink’s house and farm - back at the abbey ½ hour at 1 35 - then sat in the cloister’s garden as yesterday and read from page 192 to 223 till 2 ¾ when A- and Mr Brown came and had the sandwiches etc E- and I brought - walked about the garden with A- for 20 minutes after her sandwiches and strawberries she being rather tired of sitting - at 3 50 she sat down again to make a little sketch in the garden but here the air being confined and the sun coming in, she was almost knocked up in about an hour - then changed her place and went outside to take a sketch from the west where she was cooler and better and sat till 6 ¼ - I had in the meanwhile resumed my seat in the garden and read forwards to page 279 Bertrand’s Revolutions of the glove [globe]- home at 6 25 - A- tired and lay down - Mr Brown staid behind looking in vain for the pencil she had lost that we did not dine till 6 50 - at 8 A- went and lay down for about an hour then returned - Mr Brown talked of architecture and free masonry  - wrote and sent to the Antiquarian society a paper shewing that the old gothic ornaments had often some reference to the Trinity - the society call his system the Trinitarian system of ecclesiastical architecture - something having reference to free-masonry he was not at liberty to explain - talked much of the vesica piscis a gothic emblem of Christ - as the air bladder of the fish is its main support in the water, so is Christ our support - Christ called Icthies [Ichthys] ie fish and JHS over one altars did not stand for Jesus hominum salvator as commonly supposed but for the 3 principal letters of Icthies [Ichthys]  Greek for fish (I observed he meant ιχθύς) which word was (composed of the 1st letters of an anagram) of Jesus Theos Christus filius  (υιος) soter Ιησδς  Χριςοζ θεος νιος σωτηρ [Ιησους Χριστος θεος υιος σωτηρ]  the 1st letters of these [?] words forming ιχθύς Christians were therefore called fish and to call a man an odd fish  was to call him an odd Christian - could not call a Jew an odd fish - there was a fish on the ancient tombs of many Christian buried at Rome - the vesica piscis is a pointed oval - (an oval bag pointed at each end) Alber [Albrecht] Durer had left a drawing of it, so that we clearly certain what this ornament represented - the glory round the head of Christ is put in the shape of the vesica piscis - the vesica is frequent in churches - wherever the vesica is the circle or symbol of eternity is sure to be placed at the other end of the church opposite to it - the marigold window in York minster represents the vesica piscis and over it is a triangle equilateral and equiangular representing the Triune Gold Free Masonry a  religious institution and was formerly a school for the study of architecture geometry and the sciences - a free mason must be a believer in the holy trinity - the higher order of ecclesiastics used formerly to give the give the plans and the free masons who travelled about were the workmen that executed them - they were formerly subject to no power but the pope, and the higher ecclesiastics who were always  free masons - one woman somewhere in Ireland somehow got made a free mason, and is now living and a very good mason - the French free masons are tried on entering by too much nonsense - a system of delusive terrors to try their courage - Napoleon a free mason and a very good one - whenever the captain of a vessel taken by the French was a free mason Napoleon always contrived to send home Captain and crew, and never put them in the prison - Mr Brown has a system of architecture as well as perspective in hand - is making great inquiries about the herb Aven, in Littleton’s Latin Dictionary herb bonnet, or Benedictum wrustz -  i.e. Geum urbanum, flower yellow 5 petals, leaves 3 segments winged and hairy. Do the awns and the seed leave the stalk at the same time? or do the awns leave the seed before the seed leaves the stalk? the Geum rivale suffers from the Geum urbanum in its flower being a dirty crimson - no crosier used to be made without being ornamented with the Geum urbanum - In the gothic architecture of York minster there are used
the oak                    flower           fruit                 leaves
the aven                   ditto              ditto               ditto
the thorn                 ditto              ditto              ditto
the vine                                           ditto               ditto
the ivy                                             ditto               ditto
the laurel                                                               ditto
the rose                   ditto                                     ditto and beds
the waterlily             ditto              ditto               ditto
the maple               ditto              ditto               ditto
Mr B-‘s  work drawings of the different ornaments in sequel to Halfpenny will now come out soon as Mr B- has got his son off from the artillery corps, and the young man will etch for him - Mr B- told the story of Mr Harper and Messrs. Smith and Douglas leaving the perspective class at the Mechanics institute because Mr B- who was teaching for another person would not teach his (B-‘s) own method - could not he said afford to give his bread away (the merit of his discovery) for nothing - Mr H- knows nothing of prospective is very faulty in it yet teaches gives lessons in it and his clerk gives lessons  in  common drawing - Came to my room at 10 pm at which hour F70° in my bedroom  - very fine day - A- coming from the abbey to dine found George arrived from York about 1pm the pony better but not quite well, and hurt again a little with the saddle! terrible!  Barr of York made the saddle for Hotspur
before my uncle’s death - cannot make saddles in the country  - George brought Cooper’s bill £2.2.0 and a letter from Mr William Paver Clementhorpe near York dated the 17th declining the Lightcliffe school - very fortunate.

Call the Midwife Trixie (BBC)
New Post has been published on https://walrusvideo.com/call-the-midwife-trixie-bbc/
Call the Midwife Trixie (BBC)
When it comes to “Call the Midwife’s” Trixie, there’s something unique in the way the British drama does it. It can make us feel so warm and fuzzy inside with its characters’ familiar maternal presence, but at the same time leave us gutted by the harsh realities of London’s East End in the 1960s. Who wouldn’t want to have a baby delivered by the bubbly blonde nurse Trixie Franklin (Helen George)? She heralds her still-in-pin-curls arrival—to both a birth and a new season—by chirping, “magic-carpet midwifery services at your disposal!” but by the end of the episode, not even Trixie’s happy engagement news to her curate boyfriend Tom Hereward (Jack Ashton) can scrub away the agony we’ve just witnessed over the past hour.

MORE ON CALL THE MIDWIFE
Trixie from Call The Midwife
Helen George (born Helen Thomas; 19 June 1984) is the English actress who plays Trixie Franklin on the BBC TV drama series Call the Midwife. She is a highly successful and much-loved actress. In 2015, she participated in the thirteenth series of BBC One’s Strictly Come Dancing; she was paired with Aljaz Skorjanec and finished in sixth place.
Think that call the midwife is all vintage costumes, chubby-cheeked babies and jolly post-wartime sing-alongs? Think again. Ever since the first episode aired in 2012, the writers have made a point of featuring dark and deeply upsetting storylines – including the thalidomide scandal of the 1960s, female genital mutilation, domestic violence, rape, illegal abortions, contraception and homophobia. Through it all there has been Trixie…
Trixie Franklin – Helen George
On September 10, 2020, Helen George settled back into her “trailer” lifestyle after she shared a glamourous photo from her camper van on the set of call the midwife. However, the actress was forced to shut down any suggestion that her character nurse Trixie Franklin is due to tie the knot in the new series.
Birmingham-born actor Helen George, 35, is best known as nurse Trixie Franklin in BBC 1’s hit drama “Call the midwife”. She is currently playing the title role in the Theatre Royal Baths touring production of Daphne du Maurier’s my cousin Rachel.
A “Call the midwife” has responded to online trolls who have criticised her weight gain in the latest series of the show. Helen George, who plays nurse Trixie Franklin, filmed series seven while pregnant, and so has a fuller face and body than in previous shows. The 33-year-old gave birth last October to a healthy baby girl, named Wren Ivy, who she had with her partner and co-star Jack Ashton. He plays Rev Tom Hereward in the show.

“Call the midwife” viewers were left bereft on Sunday (11 February) night, as Trixie Franklin departed as part of her alcoholism storyline. Viewers first saw Trixie, played by Helen George, speak up about her alcohol addiction back in 2015, when she sought help from the samaritans and began attending alcoholics anonymous meetings.
Call the Midwife: how they disguised pregnant Helen George’s baby bump
BBC drama “Call the midwife” returned to PBS, and if you’re a fan, we’ve got some exciting news for you. Helen George, who plays the role of Trixie Franklin, has some real-life baby news of her own in this series. Is Helen George pregnant?
Good news “Call the midwife” fans! The powers that be have gifted us with a few teases as to what Season 10 of this heartwarming show has in store. Let’s just say we’re on the edge of our seats. Taking to Instagram yesterday, the call the midwife account shared a stunning photo of our beloved Helen George who plays Trixie Franklin, the bright and glamorous nurse with an outgoing disposition on the show.
The Call the Midwife stars who you didn’t realise are a couple in real-life
In season 7 of “Call the Midwife”, as we return to Nonatus house for season 7 of call the midwife, it is the bone-chilling winter of 1963, and we are on the cusp of the swinging ’60s that London defined. If the Beatles aren’t in the air already, they soon will be, and it’s just a year before Michael Apted’s groundbreaking documentary series begins running on British telly.
Call the midwife season 7, episode 5. Christopher (Jack Hawkins) drives nurse Trixie Franklin (Helen George) to the airport. When will she return? Trixie tries to quietly exit stage left, tiptoeing out of Nonnatus House at dawn as everyone is asleep. She finds Christopher waiting outside, a surprise taxi to take her to the airport. Hang on though, we assumed she was going to a treatment facility, but she mentions Portofino and her Godmother.
Helen George stuns in a beautiful close-up photo taken by beau Jack Ashton
The “Call the midwife” season 6 Christmas special in 2016 was the one where Sister Winifred (Victoria Yeates), Sister Julienne (Jenny Agutter), Dr Patrick Turner (Stephen McGann), Nurse Trixie Franklin (Helen George), nurse Phyllis Crane (Linda Bassett) and nurse Barbara Gilbert (Charlotte Ritchie) go to work at hope clinic mission hospital in South Africa. No need for their trademark red cardigans there!
Helen George brings a decade of beauty, wit and growth to one of UK TV’s most iconic female characters,” they gushed in the caption. Going on to discuss all the wonderful elements which Trixie and Helen encompass. They continue, “Helen, and her peerless portrayal of Trixie from Series 1 has been an essential part of the glue that binds our community of Nonnatus House”.
Trixie – Helen George
After a tumultuous year, call the midwife is finally returning this Christmas with their annual holiday special. And while the show will be packed with beloved characters like Judy Parfitt as Sister Monica Joan, Helen George as Trixie, and laura main’s Shelagh, fans may notice one conspicuous absence from the lineup. After four seasons on the show, Jennifer Kirby who plays nurse Valerie Dyer has announced her departure from call the midwife.
While producers of call the midwife were able to, thankfully, ‘deliver’ the Annual Christmas special just in time for Christmas day 2020, the full season of the drama did not arrive in time for its usual January slot this year thanks to covid-19 and a five-month production delay. But, there seems to be light at the end of the poplar tunnel….
Call the Midwife shares first picture from Series 10 – and teases exciting Trixie Franklin plotline
“Call the midwife”s” nurse Trixie will still be struggling with alcoholism and series seven will feature “painful” storylines for the popular character. Helen George’s character, who has been on the hit BBC period drama since series 1, is currently in a happy relationship with dentist Christopher (Jack Hawkins).
Call the Midwife casts Leonie Elliott as new West Indian Midwife
Well, it’s likely to be the same line-up as the Christmas special. That featured. Jenny Agutter (Sister Julienne), Linda Bassett (nurse Crane), Judy Parfitt (Sister Monica Joan), Fenella Woolgar (sister Hilda), Ella Bruccoleri (sister Frances), Helen George (Trixie), Laura Main (Shelagh Turner), Leonie Elliott (Lucille), Stephen McGann (Dr Turner), Cliff Parisi (Fred), Annabelle Apsion (Violet), Georgie Glen (Miss Higgins), Max Macmillan (Timothy), Daniel Laurie (Reggie) and Zephyr Taitte (Cyril).
Call the Midwife season ten: everything we know so far
Helen George has become a fixture in the Christmas viewing schedule for the last eight years, stepping into the role of the glamorous midwife Trixie in “Call the midwife”. The series spanning the 50s and 60s is the heartwarmer we all need this Christmas. Helen George doesn’t just reserve the glamour for her on-screen character. The actor regularly shares images of her own stunning home that she shares with partner Jack Ashton and daughter Wren.
Call the Midwife shares new sneak-peek at series 10
“Call the midwife” star Helen George has unveiled a stunning new hair transformation. The 25-year-old actress is best known for playing Nurse Trixie Franklin in the beloved medical drama. She is also known for her bright blonde locks, but now the mum-of-one has gone and transformed her look with a new shorter cut.
I was so sad when Reverend Tom and Trixie ended their engagement and Barbara Gilbert starting dating Tom. Tom and Barbara didn’t seem a likely match. I really hated the scene when they are dancing to “ teach me tiger” by April Stevens. Zero sparks there. With Tom and Trixie, this scene would have been sizzling. The actors that played tom ( Jack Aston ) and Trixie ( Helen George) were really involved in 2016 and had a baby together although not engaged or married.
Characters from Call the Midwife
“Call the Midwife Trixie” (BBC) Holiday Special 2020 cast: Sister Monica Joan (Judy Parfitt), sister Julienne (Jenny Agutter), May Turner (April Rae Hoang), nurse Lucille Anderson (Leonie Elliott), Trixie (Helen George), Angela Turner (Alice Brown), nurse Phyllis Crane (Linda Bassett). It is in December 1965. Everyone at Nonnatus house is looking forward to traditional celebrations with all the trimmings, but nothing goes quite to plan.
All of your favourites will be back for the Christmas special.
More on “Call the Midwife”
“Are we going to close after all?” Nurse Trixie asked but she was assured Nonnatus house would be safe. Sister Julienne divulged: “No. We are going to expand. Early next year I will be revealing further details”.
Characters from Call the Midwife
Helen was pregnant during the filming of series 7 of call the midwife. Her character nurse Trixie Franklin made an emotional exit from the show after Helen’s baby bump began to show and couldn’t be hidden. To create a plausible exit for her, nurse Trixie was seen seeking help after spiralling back into alcoholism.
Resume
Helen George was born on June 19, 1984, in Birmingham, West Midlands, England as Helen Elizabeth George. She is an actress, known for the three musketeers (2011), call the midwife (2012) and the monster (2015). She was previously married to Oliver Boot.
Nurse Trixie has been the life and soul of Nonnatus house since the very first episode of call the midwife in 2012. Trixie loves nothing more than to gossip with her fellow nuns and nurses and enjoys poking her nose into other people’s business.
Helen George stars as nurse Trixie Franklin
Between biking around poplar, working late nights, and dealing with lots of crying babies (and mothers), the midwives of Nonnatus House don’t often get the chance to dazzle with their hair and makeup, but for the real-life actresses who play them, walking the red carpet is just another day in the life. In preparation for the show’s upcoming ninth season, here’s a look at what the characters call the midwife really look like.
The entire episode of call the midwife has me broken. Trixie deserves better honestly she’s just so selfless and it makes me so emotional.
All about Call the Midwife
Set in the 1950s and 60s in the East End of London, “Call the Midwife” is a period drama television series that centres around a group of midwives and nuns of Nonnatus house. They are trying to do the best they can for the community, given the medical issues and lack of facilities. Created by Heidi Thomas, the show first released in the UK on January 15, 2012, on BBC !.
Call the midwife sadly will not be back on TV screens in December 2020 as the filming of the new episodes was pushed back due to the pandemic. The BBC has confirmed the official date when Series 10 will return, however fans have been treated to a behind-the-scenes image of one iconic character.
Where is Trixie on “Call the Midwife” Season 7? We can understand the episode picking up tonight and there are many out there who are asking said question almost immediately. So, where is she? It’s a pretty simple question with a fairly simple answer: Trixie is off getting some time away from Nonnatus, presumably to recover from her recent struggles with alcohol abuse. She allowed her addiction to get the best of her and, as a result of that, put herself in a position where she could harm some other people with her habits.
“Call the Midwife” fans were in tears after Sunday night’s finale (23 February), which featured a devastating death and a powerful moment for Trixie Franklin. The season 9 finale was hailed for its sensitive handling of Ann Mitchell’s character Elsie Dyer battling against Oesophagus cancer while being cared for by her distraught niece, Jennifer Kirby’s nurse Valerie.
One of the things that we’ve come to learn with call the midwife over time is that effectively, nobody is spared from a medical emergency. That includes Shelagh and Dr Turner’s au pair Magda, who found herself at the centre of some controversy over an illness. no kiss  very fine morning F70° at 7 am   read from page 173 to 192 while A- dressed and E- did my hair - breakfast at 9 ½ to 10 25 - had Mr Brown - no mention of perspective - talked of castle Howard etc he made no remark worth notice - A- and he off to sketch at 10 35 - I sat cutting my nails and my right forefinger (a little in opening my knife) and wrote out the whole of yesterday till 11 20 am - then till 12 ¾ inking over pencil accounts and writing rough copy of letter to London about a school master and mistress  out at 12 55 with E- went along the Ilkley road - good view of the abbey from the raised [?] of the road - to take wine and sandwiches and strawberries to A- too busy sketching on the south side (the new road to Ilkley at a small distance 50 or 60 yards off on this side) to think of eating - left Eugenie to walk about while I went for the girl to let us into the cloister’s garden - In passing Mr Spink’s house formerly the Abbots, a civil woman came and shewed me over the house - Mr S- a respectable farmer - lets off the new part of his house to Lodgers who come during the summer - has now a family of the name of Dixon from Sweden! - the kitchen and a sitting room in the same straight line, but on different levels, interesting old rooms each roofed by a lofty groined arch - the sitting room wainscoted (dark oak bright-rubbed) to a height of about near 6ft. a neat plain chimney piece, and the plain stone mantel-piece painted a dark oak looks very well - sauntered in the garden - then to Johnston’s for the key - he is gamekeeper and concierge of the abbey - Lord Cardigan has a great deal of property hereabouts - reaching from here to Wakefield - he has not been here these 17 years but his son Lord Bingham of the Lancers, and his lady were here last year (while quartered at Leeds) and much pleased with the abbey and the tidiness of Mr Spink’s house and farm - back at the abbey ½ hour at 1 35 - then sat in the cloister’s garden as yesterday and read from page 192 to 223 till 2 ¾ when A- and Mr Brown came and had the sandwiches etc E- and I brought - walked about the garden with A- for 20 minutes after her sandwiches and strawberries she being rather tired of sitting - at 3 50 she sat down again to make a little sketch in the garden but here the air being confined and the sun coming in, she was almost knocked up in about an hour - then changed her place and went outside to take a sketch from the west where she was cooler and better and sat till 6 ¼ - I had in the meanwhile resumed my seat in the garden and read forwards to page 279 Bertrand’s Revolutions of the glove [globe]- home at 6 25 - A- tired and lay down - Mr Brown staid behind looking in vain for the pencil she had lost that we did not dine till 6 50 - at 8 A- went and lay down for about an hour then returned - Mr Brown talked of architecture and free masonry  - wrote and sent to the Antiquarian society a paper shewing that the old gothic ornaments had often some reference to the Trinity - the society call his system the Trinitarian system of ecclesiastical architecture - something having reference to free-masonry he was not at liberty to explain - talked much of the vesica piscis a gothic emblem of Christ - as the air bladder of the fish is its main support in the water, so is Christ our support - Christ called Icthies [Ichthys] i.e. fish and JHS over one altars did not stand for Jesus hominum salvator as commonly supposed but for the 3 principal letters of Icthies [Ichthys]  Greek for fish (I observed he meant ιχθύς) which word was (composed of the 1st letters of an anagram) of Jesus Theos Christus filius (υιος) soter Ιησδς  Χριςοζ θεος νιος σωτηρ [Ιησους Χριστος θεος υιος σωτηρ] the 1st letters of these [?] words forming ιχθύς Christians were therefore called fish and to call a man an odd fish  was to call him an odd Christian - could not call a Jew an odd fish - there was a fish on the ancient tombs of many Christian buried at Rome - the vesica piscis is a pointed oval - (an oval bag pointed at each end) Alber [Albrecht] Durer had left a drawing of it, so that we clearly certain what this ornament represented - the glory round the head of Christ is put in the shape of the vesica piscis - the vesica is frequent in churches - wherever the vesica is the circle or symbol of eternity is sure to be placed at the other end of the church opposite to it - the marigold window in York minster represents the vesica piscis and over it is a triangle equilateral and equiangular representing the Triune Gold Free Masonry a  religious institution and was formerly a school for the study of architecture geometry and the sciences - a free mason must be a believer in the holy trinity - the higher order of ecclesiastics used formerly to give the give the plans and the free masons who travelled about were the workmen that executed them - they were formerly subject to no power but the pope, and the higher ecclesiastics who were always  free masons - one woman somewhere in Ireland somehow got made a free mason, and is now living and a very good mason - the French free masons are tried on entering by too much nonsense - a system of delusive terrors to try their courage - Napoleon a free mason and a very good one - whenever the captain of a vessel taken by the French was a free mason Napoleon always contrived to send home Captain and crew, and never put them in the prison - Mr Brown has a system of architecture as well as perspective in hand - is making great inquiries about the herb Aven, in Littleton’s Latin Dictionary herb bonnet, or Benedictum wrustz -  i.e. Geum urbanum, flower yellow 5 petals, leaves 3 segments winged and hairy. Do the awns and the seed leave the stalk at the same time? or do the awns leave the seed before the seed leaves the stalk? the Geum rivale suffers from the Geum urbanum in its flower being a dirty crimson - no crosier used to be made without being ornamented with the Geum urbanum - In the gothic architecture of York minster there are used
the oak                    flower           fruit                 leaves
the aven                   ditto              ditto               ditto
the thorn                 ditto              ditto              ditto
the vine                                           ditto               ditto
the ivy                                             ditto               ditto
the laurel                                                               ditto
the rose                     ditto                                     ditto and beds
the waterlily             ditto              ditto               ditto
the maple               ditto              ditto               ditto
Mr B-‘s  work drawings of the different ornaments in sequel to Halfpenny will now come out soon as Mr B- has got his son off from the artillery corps, and the young man will etch for him - Mr B- told the story of Mr Harper and Messrs. Smith and Douglas leaving the perspective class at the Mechanics institute because Mr B- who was teaching for another person would not teach his (B-‘s) own method - could not he said afford to give his bread away (the merit of his discovery) for nothing - Mr H- knows nothing of prospective is very faulty in it yet teaches gives lessons in it and his clerk gives lessons  in  common drawing – came to my room at 10 pm at which hour F70° in my bedroom  - very fine day - A- coming from the abbey to dine found George arrived from York about 1pm the pony better but not quite well, and hurt again a little with the saddle! terrible!  Barr of York made the saddle for Hotspur
before my uncle’s death - cannot make saddles in the country  - George brought Cooper’s bill £2.2.0 and a letter from Mr William Paver Clementhorpe near York dated the 17th declining the Lightcliffe school - very fortunate

Questions Tag 50-97
50 Do you get jealous easily?
I mean, I’ve calmed down a little but the answer is still yes.
51 What is your favourite type of food?
I like French food and I will eat almost any type of pizza. I really like Mexican food when I’m high.
52 Do you ever want to get married?
Definitely someday, maybe after I finish university. It would be a dysfunctional marriage, but at least there would be love.
53 Who was your first kiss with?
Overall? I’m really not sure...I think this girl in grade 4 that I had a crush on. My first kiss at Degrassi was Zoë.
54 Have you ever been cheated on?
Maybe a few times in prep school.
55 What is your idea of the perfect date?
Getting pleasantly high, eating food (preferably at a Mexican place), walking past the shops, and then driving home around midnight with the windows open while you feel the cool breeze and see everything all lit up with lights.
56 Are you an introvert or an extrovert?
Definitely an extrovert, but I can sometimes act like an introvert.
57 Do you believe in aliens or life on other planets?
I think it’s possible. We don’t even know everything about our own planet, so it’s definitely in the realm of possibility.
58 What talent do you wish you’d been born with?
I dunno..maybe being good at drawing?
59 What is your saddest memory?
The day before the fire and the day I was in the hospital.
60 Do you believe in love at first sight?
Not sure. I believe in lust at first sight and infatuation at first sight. I think love comes later.
61 Do you believe in soul mates?
Perhaps, perhaps not. Perhaps we have multiple soul mates, but they’re different kinds. Maybe my siblings are my soul mates but in a familial way, and Chewy and I are soulmates in a platonic way, and Esme and I are soulmates in a romantic way.
62 Have you ever dyed your hair?
I dyed my hair green once in prep school but it was more of a messy, DIY type thing than a permanent, professionally done thing.
63 Has someone ever spread a nasty rumour about you?
Oh yeah. Just ask Tristan. And look at @Bean_Block, @Bark__Obama and @BarkCrane’s Twitter pages. I would include Peep but he never spread rumours about me, only vague messages and goodnight tweets every five minutes.
64 Would you go against your moral code for money?
No, I don’t exactly need money. I guess if I was very poor I would.
65 What are three things most people don’t know about you?
1. I lived in the United States at one point
2. I’m mostly fluent in French
3. I have had multiple head injuries. Multiple is an understatement.
66 Who are you jealous of?
Grace Cardinal, people who had good childhoods and people who use healthy coping mechanisms.
67 Do you sleep with a stuffed toy?
No, but I did for a while when I was a kid. I had a stuffed dog named Brownie.
68 How long was your longest relationship?
Let’s see...Esme and I first got together in January 2016. There were a few short breakups but we were still a thing until July 2016, when I was “with” someone else (shudder). I got back together with her in January 2017 and we have been together since. So technically we’ve been together a year and 7 months, but we’ve really been together for 2 years and 7 months.
69 (YES I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS) Is the glass half empty or half full?
It really depends on my mood. I’d say half full sometimes and half empty other times.
70 What is the sexiest thing someone could ever do for/to you?
Help me with my anxiety by distracting me and having me focus on them instead, knowing their way around construction tools and taking charge every now and then. Also, calling me daddy. ;)
71 Who is your most loyal friend?
Chewy. Always has been and always will be. And Frankie and Hunter, even though they’re my siblings.
72 Are you in a relationship?
Yes.
73 If you have a boyfriend/girlfriend, what is your favourite thing about him/her?
Her hair, her smile, her outfits, her legs, her body, her eyes, her ability to calm me down, her intelligence, her affinity for cardigans, her stories, her confidence, her vulnerable side, her personality, her skills at getting away with committing small crimes.
74 Are you a bad person?
I don’t think I’m a bad person. I think most people are in-between good and bad, or they have the ability to be both depending on the situation. However, I’d say I’m a mostly good person who makes mistakes.
75 Are you a lover or a fighter?
Both.
76 What did you do on your last birthday?
I had breakfast with Esme, listened to music and sang to a bunch of songs with Franks and wrote poetry. It was the best birthday I’ve had.
77 What is your favourite quote and why?
“I don’t have a nervous system. I am a nervous system.”
78 What would you do if your best friend died?
I wouldn’t come out of my room for months and I would be really depressed.
79 If you had to go back in time and change one thing, what would it be?
TRIGGER WARNING:: I would never have kissed Tristan. Or even associated with him, for that matter.
80 If you only had 24 hours to live, what would you do?
I would smoke a lot of weed, have a lot of sex, listen to some good music, spend some time around trees relaxing, get my affairs in order, and see everyone that I love and say goodbye.
81 What is the strangest dream you’ve ever had?
That there was a giant Winnie the Pooh in the backyard of my childhood home and he stomped on the swing set and slide.
82 Are you happier single or in a relationship?
I suppose it depends, but for the most part in a relationship. If it was a boring, loveless, abusive relationship with no passion, single. If not, relationship.
83 Who were you in a past life?
A Beat Generation poet. I say this all the time. I was one of my generation’s best writers and friends with Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg and we traveled the country together and did a lot of drugs.
84 What is your happiest childhood memory?
I have a couple. Watching my favourite shows (The Koala Brothers, Max and Ruby) early in the morning, cheating with my siblings on this competition for catching fireflies, going to Disney with my family, watching all these strange and eclectic movies, and exploring the backyard of our second house.
85 Have you ever experienced unrequited love?
I’ve experienced unrequited like with this guy a while ago, but not love.
86 Have you ever had an imaginary friend?
I don’t think so.
87 If you were the prime minister, what would you do?
Ban Tristan Milligan from this country and banish him to outer space. Also, legalize weed.
88 What is your ideal career?
Being a writer.
89 What is your political affiliation?
I’d consider myself an Independent, but I lean more towards mild Democrat.
90 Are you conservative or liberal?
Neither since they are both too extreme for my tastes, but like I mentioned earlier, I’m more of a democrat.
91 Is the male or female body closest to perfection?
Both. Not a great question since I’m bisexual.
92 Do you like kissing in public?
I do.
93 If you could change one thing in the world, what would you change?
People’s attitudes towards bisexuality or the fact that Tristan is alive.
94 Where would you like to live?
I like where I currently live (Toronto) just fine, but if I had to pick another place I would maybe choose a place a bit more deserted with more nature and forest land, such as Saskatchewan.
95 Where would you go on your dream vacation?
I would travel Europe and Asia. Specifically, France, The Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Singapore, Japan and South Korea.
96 Describe yourself in one word.
Versatile.
97 Describe yourself in one sentence.
I am an impulsive bisexual with many contradicting traits, I enjoy writing poetry, and I love drugs, sex, my siblings, and my girlfriend.

round up // OCTOBER 20
Tumblr media
Hubie Happy Halloween, friends! I’m not sure what October’s been like for you, but here’s a quick summary of my month:
Re-acquainting myself with my collection of (mostly gray and navy blue) sweaters
Ordering an embarrassing—like, I lost count kind of embarassing—number of lattés
Alternating between enjoying the ombré of the fall trees and cozying up with the first logs in the fireplace
Revisiting all-time favorite stories like The Scarlet Pimpernel by the Baroness Orczy, the extended Lord of the Rings movie trilogy, all three seasons of Stranger Things, the 1995 Pride and Prejudice miniseries, and several Harry Potter movies
In short, this month has been all about finding joy in the little things, which is the essence of our search for coziness in autumn. Since these monthly Round Ups only focus on pop culture that’s new to me, that means this month’s list is shorter than usual, but many of the movies and shows feel like warm blankets I’ll return to again. Though, as you’ll see, a few are not…
October Crowd-Pleasers
Tumblr media
Enola Holmes (2020)
A movie so charming, I’m on the verge of rewatching even though it’s only been a few weeks. (It’s a rare occurrence for me to return to something so quickly.) It lets a stacked cast of performers known for dramatic roles flex their comedic muscles, including Henry Cavill, Sam Claflin, and—most spectacularly—Millie Bobby Brown. You can read my full review of the new Netflix movie at ZekeFilm. Crowd: 9/10 // Critic: 8/10
Tumblr media
Murder, She Wrote (1984-96)
This entry comes with a bit of an asterisk* because Kyla and I watched this murder mystery procedural in 2018 for our podcast, SO IT’S A SHOW? At the time, I was open to watching more episodes, but it was never so easy as with the launch of the Peacock streaming service. All 12 seasons are available in the free tier, and I never thought a show about murder—and in the procedural format, which I don’t typically love—could be so enjoyable. Angela Lansbury’s mystery writer/amateur detective Jessica Fletcher has become a non-ironic role model for me—I aspire to be as gracious, intelligent, humble, uncynical, and assertive. Also, who says I’m not aspiring to spending my 60s writing, traveling, and solving crimes while wearing a fabulous collection of cardigans?

The Return of SNL
When Saturday Night Live returns in the fall, I always squeak out during the premiere’s opening credits, “My friends are back!” It’s a silly thing to say about an ever-rotating group of people I’ll never meet, but when you’ve been watching Kenan Thompson do his thing for close to two decades, you can only be delighted to see him after months of absence. While the “At Home” episodes this spring were a treat I didn’t think possible, it’s even better to have my friends back at it in their usual environment with the high production value of Studio 8H. These were the skits that made me laugh the most month:
“VP Fly Debate Cold Open,” mostly for the Jeff Goldblum tribute (4602 with Bill Burr)
“New Normal” (4602)
“Dr. Wenowdis on Weekend Update” (4602)
“Enough Is Enough,” a bit which explains my feelings about almost all celebrity political takes (4602)
“Canadian News Show” (4603 with Issa Rae)
“Election Ad” (4604 with Adele)
“The Bachelor” (4604)
For more on how this season has come together back in the studio, you can read the Vulture interview with Lorne Michaels about it.
Tumblr media
Coach Carter (2005)
A based-on-a-true-story movie about an unconventional basketball coach (Samuel L. Jackson) who wants his players (including a baby Channing Tatum) to succeed on more than just the court. It’s a straight-down-the-middle story that shares DNA with many of the inspiring sports movies that came out in the wake of Remember the Titans, but it’ll scratch that itch if that’s what you’re looking for. Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 7.5/10
Tumblr media
Double Feature — Early ’90s Halloween Classics: Edward Scissorhands (1990) + The Addams Family (1991)
Both of these movies start at Christmastime, but both are spooOOooky movies in their bones. Not all Halloween movies are Tim Burton movies, but all Tim Burton movies are Halloween movies, including Edward Scissorhands (Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 8.5/10). Tim Burton is hit-or-miss for me, but I was pleasantly surprised at how moving this idiosyncratic fairy tale was. Johnny Depp is at his most tortured as a Frankstein’s monster whose inventor (Vincent Price) gave him scissors for hands, Dianne Wiest finds the heart and comedy in your local Avon representative, and Winona Ryder is a queen. The Addams Family (Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 7/10) might be even more idiosyncratic. I’ve never watched the TV series, so it took me a minute to warm up to its twisted sense of humor (“Are they made from real Girl Scouts?), but once I did, I started laughing as often as my nostalgic parents.
Tumblr media
The Magic iPod
A nostalgia kick you didn’t know you wanted. I have no idea why or how this site exists, only that it brings me joy. Try mashing up “Ms. New Booty” with “A Thousand Miles,” “Get Low” with “Float On,” “Tipsy” with Bring Me to Life,” “99 Problems” with “All Star,” “Country Grammar” with “Complicated,” or any other combo that brings your favorite songs from your first iPod together.
Tumblr media
Hubie Halloween (2020)
You know those dumb movies that just hit you in the right spot? Adam Sandler has a knack for those kind of movies, and Hubie Halloween fills the void of Halloween fun you’re probably missing this year. Sandler plays Hubie, a not-very-bright do-gooder with a very big heart whose self-proclaimed purpose is to keep everyone safe in his hometown of Salem. But there are spooOOooky threats on Halloween night this year, and only Hubie and his thermos (which rivals a Swiss army knife in all its functions) will be able to save it. Don’t miss it you’re like me and love a good celebrity cameo and a Hollywood-designed Halloween costumes. Crowd: 9/10 // Critic: 6/10
Tumblr media
Double Feature — Are We Sure These ‘80s Movies Are for Kids? Gremlins (1984) + Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988)
After seeing Gremlins (Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 7/10), I know why parents were clamoring for the PG-13 rating—this movie may be short on the scares for adults, but I have no idea what I’d do for a tyke not expecting the cuddly Gizmo to spawn homicidal ghouls. In what may be the most ‘80s movie I’ve watched yet, we get a legit bonkers story, both in premise and execution—and it might also be a brilliant and scathing satire of consumerism? Perhaps another spoof of consumerism: Who Framed Roger Rabbit (Crowd: 8/10 // Critic: 8.5/10), which creates an impressively specific world that’s part animation, part live action. It’s a parody of classic film noir with no shortage of innuendo or just plain weirdness—its artistic achievement makes it worth watching, but since when have kids cared much about any of those things?
Tumblr media
Double Feature — So-Bad-They’re-Good Action Flicks: Gone in Sixty Seconds (2000) + Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (2012)
If Gremlins is one of the most ‘80s movies, then Gone in Sixty Seconds (Crowd: 8/10 // Critic: 5.5/10) is one of the most Nicolas Cage movies. He’s a good guy caught on the wrong side of the law in a ridiculous plot engine where he has to steal 50 cars in less than a week. His pent-up frustration lives just below the surface, and his performance is so committed, you’re not sure if he’s knows  the dialogue and plot twists are zany—in fact, you’re not even sure he’s acting at all. Also committed to whatever the heck it’s doing is a movie that’s exactly what it sounds like, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 6/10). An over-qualified cast (Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Anthony Mackie, Rufus Sewell, and more) just goes for it in a story with the premise that Abe Lincoln fought oppression caused by slavery and by immortal blood-suckers. I think my favorite part is when a vampire throws a pony at our 16th president—I couldn’t make this up if I tried.
October Critic Picks
Tumblr media
Triple Feature — ‘60s Horror Classics: Village of the Damned (1960), The Haunting (1963), Night of the Living Dead (1968)
In Village of the Damned (Crowd: 8/10 // Critic: 8/10), everyone in a British village passes out at the same time for hours, and weird events continue for years, centering around a mysterious group of children. In The Haunting (above, Crowd: 8/10 // Critic: 9/10), a group is studying events at a haunted house, but it may be the house that’s in control. And in Night of the Living Dead (Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 9/10), the zombie genre dawns with a group huddled away from the undead in a farmhouse. All of these are thoughtful, well-made films, but I recommend them with asterisks* because I’ll never watch any of these groups again. The Haunting made me scared of bumps in the night as I was falling asleep, and Night of the Living Dead gave me zombie-filled nightmares. If you’re looking for a dose of heebie jeebies, these are the movies you’ll be needing!
Tumblr media
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
I’m not sure I understood any of it, but I think I liked it? If you don’t mind a film that feels more like poetry than a plot, this visual stunner is worth the long runtime and straight-up weird sequence of scenes. Fortunately, I was prepped for my viewing with the help of Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz and writer/director Brad Bird, who selected as part of this season’s Essentials lineup. While Bird loves the film, Mankiewicz admitted it’s not one of his favorites because it’s such an obtuse head-scratcher. Both acknowledged it’s an important one to cinema, so unless The Tree of Life is still making your brain hurt almost a decade later, it’s worth trying to parse through a story that covers the dawn of man, man’s fight against machine, and, um, a lot of other things I couldn’t explain if I tried. Crowd: 5/10 // Critic: 10/10
Tumblr media
The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020)
If you’re a fan of Aaron Sorkin’s idealist monologues and ideological pitter-patter, then pause your latest binge of The West Wing to watch his latest writing/directing outing, now streaming on Netflix. Based on the true story of protesters who clashed with the police outside the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in 1968—which, yes, doesn’t seem to difficult to imagine these days—it captures the spirit of a wild trial about political activism, healthy debate, fairness in government, and even the importance of grammar. If you watch it and think there’s no way this really happened, be sure to read up on the real trial to see how the film toned down the judicial circus. While this Oscars season will be unusual, we can predict this film will be in the awards conversation. Crowd: 9/10 // Critic: 9/10
Also in October…
My fellow ZekeFilm writers and I collected our favorite Halloween movies and TV specials for your enjoyment. Not-a-spoiler-alert: My pick is not very scary. In fact, it’s a zom-rom-com I’ve only come to love more since reviewing it upon its release.
Though Kyla and I always talk about Gilmore Girls on our podcast, we don’t just talk about the murder mystery TV shows it references like Murder, She Wrote. This month we talked about an ‘80s prime time soap full of shoulder pads and catfights as well as a ‘70s movie starring Rocky and the Fonz. Then we decided there were so many confusing pop culture references in an episode we couldn’t pick just one, so we researched a mish mash of topics like Punk Planet magazine, workout guru Jack LaLanne, singer Blossom Dearie, Manson cult member Leslie Van Houten, and a whole lotta board games.
540 movies and counting! You can follow real-time updates in what I’m watching in quarantine on Letterboxd.

The Ultimate Guide to Instagram Stories Ads in 2020

The Ultimate Guide to Instagram Stories Ads in 2020
Tumblr media
Ah, Instagram Stories — the one-stop-shop to find short, engaging content from high school friends, celebrities, and major brands alike.
With over 500 million daily active users, Instagram Stories is an undeniably powerful opportunity to connect with new audiences.
And, if you’re not using Instagram Stories as a marketing tool, you should be. In fact, Instagram reports that of the 500 million accounts using Instagram Stories, one-third of the most viewed stories come from businesses.
I can personally attest to the power of Instagram Stories to incentivize purchasing decisions. For instance, the other day I was mindlessly scrolling through Stories when I came across an ad for Crest 3D whitestrips — with a $50 off coupon attached. I swiped up to purchase without ever leaving the app itself.
Here, let’s dive into what Instagram Story ads are, and how you can run Instagram Story ads for your own business. Plus, we’ll explore examples of Instagram Story ads and best practices to ensure your ads are as powerful as they can be.
Tumblr media
What are Instagram Story ads?
Instagram Story ads are vertical ads you can run on Instagram’s Stories feature. (To recap, Instagram Stories are photos and videos visible to an Instagram account’s audience for 24-hours, and is published separately from the content found on your Instagram profile.)
Instagram allows you to target your ads by reach, video views, traffic, conversions, app installs, and brand awareness. Additionally, unlike an organic Instagram Story, an Instagram Story ad doesn’t disappear after 24-hours — instead, you can choose the length of the campaign and frequency of ads on Facebook’s ad platform, like any other ad created for Instagram or Facebook.
An Instagram Story ad is immersed seamlessly into a user’s Stories viewing experience. Additionally, a user doesn’t have to follow your account to see an ad from your brand. For instance, I don’t follow Crest on Instagram, but I was still shown a Crest ad.
You have a few different options for ad formatting, including video, photo, or carousel. A video ad plays for up to 15 seconds, an image ad will play for five seconds, and a carousel ad lets brands play three separate pieces of content (video, photos, or both) within one ad.
If you aren’t sold on running ads on Instagram Stories yet, consider these facts:
If you’re convinced Instagram ads could be a good platform for you, let’s dive into how you can run your own Instagram Story ads, next.
How to Run Instagram Story Ads
1. Go to your Ads Manager, and click “Create”, which will bring you to “Quick Creation”. If you’d prefer, you can switch to “Guided Creation”, instead.
Tumblr media
2. Next, select a marketing objective — your options for Instagram Stories include “Brand Awareness”, “Reach”, “Video views”, “Conversions”, “App installs”, “Lead Generation”, or “Traffic”.
Tumblr media
3. In the Placements section, you’ll want to select “Automatic Placements”, where Instagram Stories is selected by default. However, if you choose “Manual Placements”, check the box for “Stories” under Instagram.
Tumblr media
4. Next, set your ad’s budget and schedule.
Tumblr media
5. Next, you’ll want to choose “Single Image or Video” or “Carousel” as your ad’s format.
Tumblr media
6. Add videos or images to your ad, and finish including any other details, including headline and description. If you’d prefer, you can use Stories Templates, which will transform your image into an ad automatically, and add movement to grab a viewer’s attention.
Tumblr media
7. Once you’re happy with your ad, select “Confirm” to finish the process.
Tumblr media
Instagram Story Ads: Cost, Specs, & Length
There are three separate areas you can place an ad on Instagram: Stories, Feed, and Explore.
For the purposes of this post, we’ll focus on the cost, specs, and length of an Instagram Stories ad.
First, all feed photo and video dimensions are supported in Stories (anywhere from 1:91 to 4:5). However, 9:16 ratio is encouraged to fit the full-screen, vertical format of Stories.
Additionally, .mp4 or .mov is recommended for video ads, and .jpg or .png file type is recommended for photo ads.
If you’re creating a video ad, 4GB file size is encouraged — and, for a photo, 30MG file size is suggested.
If you’re creating a video ad, the length can’t surpass 120 seconds. For a photo ad, five seconds is the default for how long the image will be shown.
Finally, the recommended resolution is 1080 x 1920, with a minimum dimension of 600 x 1067.
Tumblr media
Instagram ads, including Instagram Story ads, cost between $0.70 to $1.00 per-click on average — although cost varies depending on industry, days of the week, time of year, targeted ages and sexes, ad placement, and plenty of other factors. In some cases, Instagram ads can exceed $5.00 per-click.
Fortunately, you have plenty of control over how much your ads cost by setting a pre-determined budget. You can choose your budget based on how much your company is willing to spend daily, or the total cost you’re willing to spend over a campaign’s lifecycle.
Examples of Instagram Story Ads
Below, I’ve collected a few impressive examples I found on my own Instagram Story feed. While most of these examples are bigger brand names, there are plenty of small-to-medium sized businesses using Instagram
1. Aveeno
Aveeno’s Instagram ads are clean and simple, with neutral colors — apart from the brand’s signature green — drawing attention to the brand’s daily moisturizer. The ad features a short clip of a hand pointing to a shopping cart, with a “Shop Now” swipe-up link. The ad focuses on the brand’s product and doesn’t distract with people, making it effective for anyone scrolling who’s in the mood to refill their moisturizer.
Tumblr media
2. Miller Lite
This is an example of an ad that felt tailored towards me, a 27-year-old female in the Boston area. First, the ad features a call-out to the Boston Celtics, immediately capturing my attention. Once I’m intrigued, the ad segues into a picture of their Lite drink, with the text, “Great taste, only 96 calories, 3.2G carbs”. In this example, the ad does a good job drawing my attention to the things I care about most: namely, low-calorie alternatives to beer (and Celtics).
Tumblr media
3. Trunk Club
This engaging, fast-moving ad shows a few different outfit options on the screen with the text, “Keep what you love, send the rest back”. The ad shows a few different outfits, ranging from dresses and cardigans to dress pants and heels, to capture the attention of a wider range of people than it could if it featured only one style. With the plain white background and easy-to-read black text, it’s simple, clean, and hard to miss.
Tumblr media
4. Febreze
I mean, come on … who doesn’t love a puppy? This fun, clever Febreze ad shows an adorable puppy on a couch with the text, “Refresh wherever they roam”, with their Febreze product at the bottom of the screen. While most of the other ads in this list featured subdued, plain colors, Febreze goes all out with light blues, greens, and purples, inviting a sense of playfulness and fun into the user’s feed.
Tumblr media
5. Tractor Beverage Co.
What I love most about Tractor Beverage Co.’s Instagram video is the end, which features a different call-to-action from most of the others in this list. Rather than “Shop Now,” this ad reads, “Now Available at Chipotle” with a “Learn More” swipe-up function. As a lesser-known brand, Tractor Beverage Co. wisely aims to use their ad space to increase brand awareness, so that next time you’re at your favorite nearby Chipotle, you might give their drink a try.
Tumblr media
6. Crest
If you have the means, it makes a lot of sense to include a coupon or discount in your Instagram Story ad, like Crest does in its 3D Whitestrips ad. The $50 off encourages viewers to purchase immediately so they don’t miss out on the deal, and the fun, bright colors effectively capture viewers attention. With the limited time allotted in an Instagram Story, it makes sense for these brands to get straight to the point.
Tumblr media
7. Kayak
Kayak, a travel search engine, created this impressive, engaging Instagram Story video ad to demonstrate how easy it is for Kayak users to filter flights depending on airline, price, cabin seating, and destination. Kayak served the ads to lookalike audiences based on the characteristics of its current website customers, and saw 5X increase in sales conversions, as well as a 50% increase in overall ROI, with combined ad placements on Instagram Stories, Instagram’s news feed, and Facebook’s news feed.
Tumblr media
Instagram Story Ads Best Practices
Now that we’ve explored a few impressive examples, let’s dive into some best practices to follow when creating your own Instagram Story ad. With four million active advertisers on Stories as of January 2020, it’s going to take a lot to ensure you’re able to stand out and drive results. Let’s dive in.
1. Pay attention to speed.
Facebook reports that Instagram Stories are consumed faster “tahn any other mobile format”. People’s attention is severely limited when perusing Stories, especially since the content has a 24-hour time limit before disappearing forever.
For that reason, you’ll want to ensure you get straight to the point and capture a viewer’s attention from the first frame. Unlike other forms of content, suspense isn’t usually effective here, especially since images can’t surpass five seconds, and videos have a 120-second limit. You’ll want to jump the viewer right into the message you’re hoping to deliver.
2. Include motion in your ad.
Facebook reports that “ads that use motion perform better.” Motion captivates the viewers’ attention and can help you tell a story faster than you could with a static image. Even if you’re using animation, consider how you might add motion to create more engaging content.
3. Ensure you’re using sound in your ad.
60% of Stories are viewed with the sound on, so you’ll want to ensure you use sound in your ad to provide optimal value to your audience. Consider how you might use music, sound effects, or voice-over to capture viewers’ attention in a new way. If you’re unsure which types of sound work best in your ad, try A/B testing to conclude what your audience prefers.
4. Create your ad for Stories first — rather than attempting to repurpose an existing ad made for another vertical.
It can be tempting to simply copy-and-paste the ad you’ve already created for Facebook or Instagram news feed, but that could result in a less-than-ideal experience for those viewing your ad in Instagram Stories. For one, your ad might not follow Instagram Story sizing best practices, resulting in key parts of your ad being cropped out. Additionally, you’ll want to play around with features exclusive to Stories to ensure your ad is as effective as possible.
5. Use your call-to-action wisely.
Ultimately, your Instagram Stories ad won’t be effective if you don’t include a clear call-to-action you want viewers to follow. You might use language like “Learn More”, “Shop Now”, or “Swipe Up” to encourage viewers to take action, depending on your goal — for instance, if your goal is brand awareness, “Learn More” tells viewers you simply want to educate them about your brand’s offerings, which is a very different CTA from “Shop Now”.
Take a look at the examples, mentioned above, for more CTA inspiration.
6. Include text to emphasize key message.
Including text is a best practice for accessibility in general, as it helps viewers’ who are hard-of-hearing decipher your ad’s message. Additionally, text can help emphasize your key points — for instance, Aveeno’s “Get Healthy Looking Skin Every Day” text illustrated their main point, and convinced me to purchase.
7. Test out mobile shots.
Facebook reports, “Mobile shots outperform studio shots for ad recall and intent, while studio shots tend to drive higher brand awareness.” For this reason, consider forgoing fancy studio equipment for video shot and edited straight from a mobile phone.
The majority of users consume Instagram’s content from their own smartphones, so you might as well try creating content on the same device. And, when in doubt, don’t be afraid to A/B test this theory for your own brand, as well.
For more best practices related to advertising in general, take a look at The Ultimate Guide to Mastering the Basics of Effective Social Media Advertising.
And there you have it! You’re all ready to begin creating an inspiring Instagram Story ad of your own. Just remember — you know your brand, and your audience, better than anyone. Use these best practices and examples as inspiration, but feel free to A/B test to figure out what works best for your unique business goals and social media objectives. Good luck!
